history

Lippitzbach Castle

Local silver mining near the present-day towns of Eis and St. Nikolai has been documented since the 12th century and may have been in operation more than 2000 years ago (the place name is derived from the Slovenian "Ruda"); the Celtic silver coins from the first century BC found in 1858 may go back to local silver mines (see also the section on coats of arms ). Ore mining was carried out near Ruden.

For a long time, today's municipality was part of the Weißenegg dominion, which had its seat at Weißenegg Castle, which was built in the 12th century . The first Weißenegger is said to have been a Wülfing from "Wizzeneck" who is said to have lived around 1120. From 1300 on, Weißenegg had a certain importance as the seat of a regional court, which also included Ruden, but this regional court was moved to Griffen in 1491. The Weißeneggers had already sold the castle and the lordship to the Lords of Walsee in 1332 , from whom the property was transferred to the Counts of Cilli by inheritance in 1363 and to the Archdiocese of Bamberg in 1425 by an exchange . Weißenegg remained Bamberg until 1759, when the Bambergers sold their possessions in Carinthia, and the castle, which had been abandoned at that time, and the surrounding forests finally came into private ownership.

In 1521 Ruden was designated as an independent parish. The parish church of St. Magdalena is a late Gothic building with vaults from the 15th century.

An old wine-growing area in Ruden, which is only attested from the 17th century, still bears the name "Weingarten" today. It can be assumed with certainty that this vineyard was also laid out in the Middle Ages.

In Eis bei Ruden there was a post office from 1789 to May 29, 1874. The post office was on what is now the "Svetyhof". The Post Office Eis, located on the postal route into the now Slovenian Miessal, was important as a horse changing point in the middle of the 18th century.

The current local community goes back to the foundation of two local communities Ruden and Eis in 1850. The latter was already divided into two local communities in 1854, of which the one belonging to the Völkermarkt district was connected to Ruden in 1865. Four years later, in 1869, Ruden was incorporated into Griffen , but became independent again in 1876.

In 2017, the ground plans of a Roman village were discovered in ice during the construction of a tunnel for the Koralm Railway . Coins and clay pots were also found there. Until today (as of August 2, 2018) work is still being carried out on the excavation of this site. Fortunately, the finds did not hinder the construction of the new tunnel.

coat of arms

The official blazon of Ruden's coat of arms reads: "Silver round shield with tectosage cross based on the model of the Celtic silver small coin of the 'ice type', ie with a three-striped green cross, four-pointed, star-shaped red center and each one tapering red petal in the four cross peaks."

It refers to the discovery of Celtic silver coins from the 1st century BC. BC, the back of which shows a cross-shaped figure. This goes back to the stylized rose of the Greek trading colony Rhoda in southern France, where from 300 BC. The Celtic people of the tectos were resident. The red parts of the coat of arms are reminiscent of the red rose of Rhoda, the origin of the Tectosagen cross, the three-striped green cross bars below it of its vegetable origin and the silver shield background of the historical silver mining.

The municipality's coat of arms and flag were awarded on June 14, 1960. The flag of Ruden shows the longitudinally striped colors red-white-green with incorporated municipal coat of arms.
