The branch church of Saint John

The Sankt Johanner Höhenstraße connects the two districts of Völkendorf and Sankt Martin.

  • At the apex of this street is the subsidiary church of Saint John , which was first mentioned in a document in 1331. The small Gothic building dates from the 14th century. Its single-nave, single-bay nave was heavily modified. The choir from the 14th century has a 5/8 end . The wooden roof turret with pointed helmet has been restored. A square, two-storey sacristy annex adjoins the choir to the south. The choir is spanned by a ribbed vault resting on consoles with a round keystone. On the right is a small, Gothic sacrament niche. On the left are fragments of frescoes in three zones from the late 14th century. The slightly retracted triumphal arch shows traces of an old painting. In the southern corner between the nave and the choir wall is a console head, a grimace. The vault above is not completely preserved. The high altar with a painting of the baptism of Jesus Christ dates from the late 17th century; On the south wall of the nave hangs a painting "Christ on the Cross", which is heavily painted over. The Gothic statues of two saints were walled in on the south-eastern outer wall.
