Hensel barracks

The Hensel barracks is located in the hamlet of Obere Fellach in the Fellach district in the city of Villach in Carinthia . The barracks of the Austrian Armed Forces is a listed buildingf2 . The barracks was named after Friedrich Hensel (1781–1809).

history

The building - built around 1860 - was part of the Santner estate, consisting of a mill, a sawmill and an agricultural business. The facility was acquired by the military in 1912 and used as barracks for the newly founded kuk sappers (sapper battalion No. 4). In the Second Republic, the barracks was used by the Engineer Battalion 1 as accommodation. The 2nd operational supply point was housed by the military command and was responsible for the administration of all barracks in Upper Carinthia. In 2016, the barracks were being considered as quarters for asylum seekers , but the Federal Ministry of the Interior preferred a cheaper container village for 250 people on agricultural land.

The monumental rectangular building under a high hipped roof has a shallow central projection and a rustikaportal. The ground floor has square vaults .
