Container village
A container village is an often temporarily installed collection of container buildings in which, for example, workers, soldiers or refugees are housed on large construction sites or military camps . Depending on the size and duration of the installation, the term container city is also used.
Individual units are adapted to the individual needs of the intended use, common are living and sleeping units, sanitary facilities and modules for operating the infrastructure such as electricity and drinking water or the necessary local administration .
Examples
- The US military camp at Camp Lemonnier at Djibouti-Ambouli International Airport uses containers as accommodation, shower and living space. It has a diameter of around 600 meters, has existed since 2007 and is home to around 3500 soldiers.
- In the city of Berlin , affordable accommodation for students has been offered in 320 containers since October 2013 . The individual units are furnished by architects as a complete rental apartment for one person, partly also combined as a shared flat and arranged as a village as a whole . The former freight containers are connected to running water, electricity and the internet . The idea comes from Munich , where something similar has been done since 2005.
