The Defereggentalstraße (L 25) is a 35.04 km long country road in Tirol , district Lienz . It connects the Defereggental to the Felbertauernstraße in the Iseltal and runs from the Huben district of the municipality of Matrei in East Tyrol to St. Jakob in Defereggen . The road is looked after by the road maintenance department in Matrei in East Tyrol.
history
Development of the Defereggentalstraße
Already in the early modern period there was a road from Sankt Jakob to Unterpeischlach for the transport of the mined ores . The steep and winding path was only expanded into a passable road in the 20th century, with the construction being completed before the First World War. In 1910 the Austrian treasury paid 6,000 crowns for the construction of the line between Sankt Jakob and Erlsbach.
Defereggentalstrasse in the 21st century
Between summer 2004 and November 2006, a 1.1 kilometer long avalanche gallery, the so-called Erlach gallery, was built in the area of kilometers 4.1 to 5.2. The construction had become necessary after the Defereggentalstraße was endangered in this area by three avalanche lines and a high risk of falling rocks. The construction was carried out using the open construction method, whereby the individual sections of the gallery were built from 12 m long blocks with three columns each. The costs of around 8 million euros were borne by the municipalities of the Defereggental, the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, the Environment and Water Management and the State of Tyrol.
In a further construction step, the route was raised in the area of Plon in the municipality of Hopfgarten (kilometers 6.4 to 7.4), as in the Plon area it ran over long stretches below the flood drainage line (HQ 100) of the Schwarzach. The construction work was carried out between spring 2008 and summer 2008, the cost of around 850,000 euros being borne by the state of Tyrol.
After a massive rock fall on July 18, 2009 in the “Dure” area, Defereggentalstrasse had to be closed, with work to secure the affected rock channel continuing until the end of November. Due to the closure of the road in this area, Sankt Jakob could only be reached via a bypass through the villages of Bruggen and Feistritz until the closure was lifted. The closure was lifted shortly before the start of the 2009/10 winter season and the state road was renewed in spring 2010.
course
The Defereggentalstraße rises steeply from Huben and overcomes a deep gorge in the north of the Schwarzach . As a result, the road reaches the community of Hopfgarten in Defereggen and runs along the Schwarzach to the west through the districts of Dölach, Hopfgarten and Plon. The road then runs through the municipality of St. Veit in Defereggen , briefly changing to the south bank of the Schwarzach and then on the north bank through the districts of Görtschach and the hamlets of Zotten (district of Görtschach or Gritzen), Osing (Gritzen), Mentlerboden (Bruggen) and Feld (Bruggen) leads. The Defereggentalstraße then reaches the municipality of St. Jakob in Defereggen and crosses parts of the Ausserrotte and Innerrotte. The road then continues through the main town of the municipality (Unterrotte) and follows the northern bank of the Schwarzach to the hamlets of Mariahilf, Ladstatt and Erlsbach der Oberrotte. While a toll road leads further into the Schwarzachtal near Erlsbach, the Defereggentalstraße crosses the Schwarzach to the south near Erlsbach and climbs up to the Obersee and the Staller Sattel . However, the pass road is only open between mid-May and the end of October, with a one-way regulation on the subsequent Italian side.
traffic
The Defereggentalstraße serves to develop the villages in the Defereggental, the driveway to the Staller Sattel is of purely tourist importance. In 2018, an average of 2041 vehicles per day were counted in Hopfgarten.
