The Obersee is a mountain lake at 2016  m above sea level. A. , located at the end of the Defereggental on the Staller Sattel in East Tyrol .

It is about 600 m long, at its widest point 200 m wide and 27 m deep. It is located between the Rieserferner Group in the north and the Villgraten Mountains in the south. The lake is owned by the municipality of St. Jakob in Defereggen , on whose territory it is located. On the South Tyrolean side at 1642  m slm is the Antholz lake , also called Untersee. The lakes are not connected to each other.

The Obersee is fed by mountain streams from the surrounding peaks such as the Weißbach and drains at its northeastern end into the Staller Almbach, which flows over the Schwarzach to the Isel  . On the north bank, a stone pine forest extends to the bank, and it is also embedded in large populations of alpine roses . Near the lake outlet limits fens to the shore.

The Obersee is very rich in fish. In addition to char , brown trout , bullhead and minnow, there is also the rainbow trout used there .

Archaeological finds on the lakeshore show that the area had been visited since the Mesolithic . Since 1048 the Obersee, together with the Untersee and the surrounding forest, has been owned by the Brixen monastery , which cleared the area and employed several hunters and fishermen. Since the lake was too far away from Brixen, it was given to a fisherman from Antholz as a fief. Fishing on the Obersee remained of great importance until the 19th century.

In 1999 divers found a 1000 year old dugout canoe made of Swiss stone pine in the lake , which was originally around 5 m long. This was salvaged and restored a year later and is now in the Defereggen Time Travel Valley Museum in St. Jakob in Defereggen . It was probably used for feudal fishing on behalf of the Brixen bishops.

The lake is the site of the world's highest dragon boat race , which will be held for the 7th time in 2014.
