The Almerhorn ( 2986  m above sea level ) is the easternmost peak of the Rieserferner Group and is located near the Austrian-Italian border ( Staller Sattel ) in East Tyrol between the Patscher Valley and the Staller Valley or the Antholz Valley. The neighboring peaks are the Großer and Kleiner Mandl as well as the ear tips , from which the Almerhorn is separated by the Jägerscharte. The summit cross was erected by the Catholic teachers in East Tyrol.

Increase opportunities

The ascent to the Almerhorn can be done from two sides. An ascent option leads through the Patscher valley to the Barmer hut (2610 m). From the hut the marked ascent runs below the ear tips, initially descending to the southeast. Then the path climbs up again over block heaps and crosses the Almerkees along cairns to the Jägerscharte. From the Jägerscharte a short ascent leads to the Almerhorn.

The Almerkees on the way from the Barmer Hütte to the Almerhorn is a prime example of climate change. While this glacier field was still a prominent part of the eastern Rieserferner group in the 1980s , it has virtually disappeared today in summer, with the exception of small remaining areas. At this point in summer only large block heaps emerge.

Another ascent option is the Obersee (2016 m) on the Staller Sattel as a starting point . The marked path leads from the Oberseehütte over a furrowed path to the Kamm memorial cross. The trail then continues uphill in bends and offers a long view of Lake Antholz . After green hills, a steep slag heap has to be climbed in serpentines until a shallow pool follows. Then the path leads up to the left over a block ridge. A junction here leads to the Großer Mandl. After a block basin, the path leads to the left on the edge of a steep slope up to the Jägerscharte, the rock path being secured with iron pins and ropes.
