history

monarchy

Electoral districts for the  newly elected state parliaments were set up in the Austrian Empire for the Crown Land Duchy of Salzburg with the October diploma in  1860, when Salzburg received a new state statute, and were re-ordained for all crown lands with the February patent 1861. The Landtag in the Duchy of Salzburg had a total of 26 (originally 20) seats ( MPs ), including 10 representatives of the cities and markets (constituency II, originally 5) and 8 of the rural communities (constituency III, originally 9). The following were planned for the Pinzgau:

republic

Originally there was only one constituency in state elections in the state of Salzburg of the Republic of Austria . After the 1977 state election in Burgenland had been challenged by the Constitutional Court, the Constitutional Court recognized that the use of “constituencies” in Article 26 of the Federal Constitutional Act, i.e. in the plural, must be interpreted as meaning that there must be at least two constituencies per federal state. As a result, the affected federal states of Carinthia, Salzburg and Burgenland changed their state election regulations. The state of Salzburg carried out the necessary adaptation with the state election regulations adopted on September 27, 1978, which divided the state of Salzburg into six constituencies. The Zell am See district subsequently formed its own constituency.

The Landtag constituency of Zell am See was dominated almost exclusively by the Austrian People's Party (ÖVP). Between 1979 and 1999, the ÖVP always achieved between 40 and 49%, with its best result in 1984 with 49.3%. However, since the state elections in 1984, the ÖVP has gradually lost its share of the vote, with only 28.9% in 2013, its worst result in the constituency. Nevertheless, the ÖVP achieved first place in the constituency of Zell am See with two exceptions, only with the triumph of Gabi Burgstaller the ÖVP lost first place in the constituency in 2004 and 2009.

The Social Democratic Party of Austria  (SPO) was with two exceptions becoming the second largest party in the constituency, where she had achieved in 1979 44.8% and almost lost successively to 1999 to 36.0% as a result. With the appearance of Gabi Burgstaller, the SPÖ was able to overtake the ÖVP in 2004 and achieve its best result to date with 48.0%. In 2009 the SPÖ was able to maintain its top position despite losses; in 2013 it fell to 26.6%, its worst result to date.

The Freedom Party of Austria  (FPÖ) has so far been the third strongest party in the Zell am See district in every election, and in 2013 it achieved its best result to date with 20.3%. The Zell am See district was thus the constituency with the best FPÖ result in 2013. Up until 2009, the Greens Salzburg did not reach more than 5.0% in any election. Thanks to massive wins in the state elections, the Greens were able to achieve their best result with 13.9% in 2013, but still only finished fourth behind the FPÖ.
