today's Archduke Johann barracks

The Strass Castle is located in the eastern part of the southern Styrian town of Straß in Steiermark in the municipality of Straß in Steiermark.

It was first mentioned in the 12th century, when the von Mureck gentlemen had a fortified courtyard built on the site of today's castle building . This was supposed to protect the then newly created settlement from incursions from the east. In the middle of the 13th century, the fortifications and the village of Strass came to the Lords of Neitperg ( Neuberg Castle ). In 1286 Gottschalk and Dietrich von Neitperg sold Strass to Friedrich von Pettau . The rule was a free property . During the 15th century this belonged to the noble lords of Graben .

Around 1550, Strass came into the possession of the Eggenbergers through Bartholomäus von Eggenberg . When the Turks invaded in 1580, the small defense structure was destroyed and a castle was built by the Eggenbergers. At the beginning of the 17th century, the villages of Strass , Nieder- and Obervogau , Ratsch, Weingartenholden as well as various bailiwick rights and tithe with subjects in the area belonged to the high (free) rule. Hans Ulrich von Eggenberg was able to complete the castle in 1616. In 1622, Strass became the seat of a regional court. In 1740 Maria Eleanor Leslie inherited the rule.

With 336 interest-bearing houses, which were scattered in 54 places, the rule reached its greatest extent towards the end of the 18th century. In 1806 Karl Graf Attems inherited the castle in Strass . Since his family did not live in this castle, it was used by the administrator and some tenants as an apartment.

In 1852 the building was sold to the armed forces , which two years later had it redesigned in a neo-Gothic style. First it served as a cadet institute and then as a barracks.

From 1945 numerous refugees were housed here.

Since 1955 it has served the Austrian armed forces as a barracks again ( Jägerbataillon 17 ).

The barracks have been called "Erzherzog-Johann-Kaserne" since 1967, and a troop museum has been set up in one part of the building.
