Agnes Gertrud von Habsburg

Agnes Gertrud von Habsburg (* 1257 in Rheinfelden , Duchy of Swabia ; † October 11, 1322 in Wittenberg , Duchy of Saxony-Wittenberg ) was a member of the House of Habsburg . She was the wife of Albrecht II. Duchess of Saxony. When the Duchy of Saxony was divided in 1296, Agnes became Duchess of Saxony-Wittenberg.

Agnes was born the younger daughter of Rudolf IV von Habsburg and his first wife Gertrude von Hohenberg .

The Habsburgs were a relatively insignificant family until Agnes' father Rudolf was elected Roman-German king in 1273 . Then began the rise of the Habsburgs to the ruling dynasty of the Holy Roman Empire .

Agnes was the fourth of ten children. Her brother Albrecht I succeeded his father as Roman-German king. Her brother Hartmann drowned in 1281. Rudolf II became Duke of Swabia , but died in 1290. Agnes and her sisters were married to powerful princes: Mathilde married Ludwig, Duke of Upper Bavaria , Katharina Otto III. von Niederbayern , Hedwig Otto VI., Margrave of Brandenburg-Salzwedel , Klementia Karl Martell, Titular King of Hungary and Guta King Wenzel II. of Bohemia . Thereby he secured the support of the powerful princes in the empire.

After the death of Agnes' mother in 1281, Rudolf married Isabella of Burgundy . Apart from Guta, she was younger than her stepchildren.

Agnes was buried in the Franciscan monastery in Wittenberg. In 1883 the bones were transferred to the Wittenberg Castle Church.

Marriage and offspring

Duke Albrecht II gave Rudolf von Habsburg his vote in 1273 when he was elected Roman-German king. In return, he and Agnes married on his coronation day, October 24, 1273, in Aachen . They had six children:
