Hedwig von Habsburg

Hedwig von Habsburg (or Heilwig ; * around 1260 in Rheinfelden , Duchy of Swabia ; † 1303 in the Mark Brandenburg ) was a member of the House of Habsburg . From 1279 to 1285/1286 she was married to the Ascanian Otto VI. von Brandenburg-Salzwedel Margravine of Brandenburg.

Hedwig was born the younger daughter of Rudolf IV von Habsburg and his first wife Gertrude von Hohenberg . The exact year of birth is unknown, but can be assigned through the births of her siblings between 1258 and 1261. The Habsburgs were a relatively insignificant family until Hedwig's father Rudolf was elected Roman-German king in 1273 . Then began the rise of the Habsburgs to the ruling dynasty of the Holy Roman Empire

Hedwig was the fifth of ten children. Her brother Albrecht I succeeded his father as Roman-German king. Her brother Hartmann drowned in 1281. Rudolf II became Duke of Swabia , but died in 1290. Hedwig and her sisters were married to powerful princes: Mathilde married Ludwig, Duke of Upper Bavaria , Katharina Otto III. of Lower Bavaria , Agnes Albrecht II the Duke of Saxony-Wittenberg , Klementia Karl Martell, Titular King of Hungary and Guta King Wenzel II of Bohemia .

After the death of Hedwig's mother in 1281, Rudolf married Isabella of Burgundy . Apart from Guta, she was younger than her stepchildren.

Hedwig himself married Otto VI in the residence of the Habsburgs in Vienna in 1279 . von Brandenburg- Salzwedel , son of Margrave Otto III. of Brandenburg from the house of the Ascanians .

The couple had one child who died early. In 1285 or 1286, her husband renounced all claims to the Mark Brandenburg in favor of his brother and joined the Knights Templar . Hedwig died around 1303. She was buried in the Cistercian Abbey of Lehnin .
