The Canal Saint-Louis is a shipping canal in southern France that branches off the canalized Rhône and flows into the Mediterranean in the Gulf of Fos . Since the direct confluence of the Rhône into the Mediterranean is not navigable for ships due to large debris deposits , this canal is the last possibility for shipping to leave the mouth of the Rhône and sideways into the Mediterranean. Another option is the Canal du Rhône à Fos , which is further upstream .

course

The sea canal branches off the Grand Rhône estuary near the city of Port-Saint-Louis-du-Rhône against the direction of flow and first reaches the Port-Saint-Louis sea lock with dimensions of 150 × 22 meters. Immediately behind it is the small city harbor, which the canal leaves in an easterly direction. Then he passes a warehouse and industrial complex with various port facilities. After about 5 kilometers, the channel flows into the Gulf of Fos, where it is protected from the sea side by a dike for a few hundred meters. After a short crossing in the port of Fos-sur-Mer, barges can reach the Canal de Fos à Port-de-Bouc and continue on this in the direction of Étang de Berre .
