The Barcarin ferry at the junction with the Rhône |
The Canal du Rhône à Fos is a shipping canal in southern France that runs between the canalized Rhône and the Darse 1 port basin in Fos-sur-Mer . The sea channel has a length of around 16 kilometers and is used exclusively to connect freight traffic on the Rhône with the port facilities on the Mediterranean coast in the Gulf of Fos . Leisure boats must use the Canal Saint-Louis, which runs further south .
course
The canal branches off in the municipality of Port-Saint-Louis-du-Rhône above the Barcarin ferry from the canalized Grand Rhône estuary in a north-easterly direction and immediately afterwards reaches the Bacarin lock , the only one on this canal. It has dimensions of 195 × 12 meters and is therefore designed for large push convoys. The canal then runs parallel to some salt pans , reaches the Canal d'Arles à Fos and, after a 90 ° curve to the southeast, takes over its former course. The Canal d'Arles à Fos itself is blocked to shipping north of the junction by a salt water barrier. The Canal du Rhône à Fos now reaches the port basin Darse 1 in the industrial zone of Fos-sur-Mer and finally flows into the Mediterranean Sea in the Golfe de Fos.
In Fos-sur-Mer there is a connection for inland waterway vessels to the Canal de Fos à Port-de-Bouc , via which the port of Port-de-Bouc and via the Canal de Caronte also the lagoon lake Étang de Berre can be reached. An earlier possible onward journey on the Canal de Marseille au Rhône to the port of Marseille is no longer possible since the collapse of the Tunnel du Rove .
