Roßhirt house

The Roßhirt house is a listed building in Heidelberg .

It originally consisted of two houses. The western one was built as a brewery in 1743. The eastern one had existed since at least 1703, was rebuilt in 1732 and had changing owners. In 1839 Konrad Franz Roßhirt , professor at the University of Heidelberg , bought the houses, united them and had a floor added. 1969–74 the building was converted to house the university's German Institute.

The three-storey house with a hipped roof is located in the eastern half of Hauptstrasse , the most important street in Heidelberg's old town , on Karlsplatz between the town hall and the Palais Boisserée . The stately baroque plastered facade has nine window axes with typical ear windows. There are two large, arched gate entrances symmetrically to the axis. Inside, the staircase from 1732 has been preserved.
