The town hall is a historic building in the old town of Heidelberg .

After the original town hall was destroyed during the War of the Palatinate Succession in 1689, a new building in the Baroque style was erected on the same site between 1701 and 1703 . The masks and the electoral coat of arms by the Hungarian sculptor Heinrich Charrasky on the front facade also date from this first epoch of the town hall . Charrasky's work can also be seen at the Giant's House .

The town hall has since undergone several modifications and additions. The north wing was added between 1886 and 1890. The large hall of the town hall, which is located in that wing, is designed in neo-Renaissance style and decorated with paintings and windows on the history of the Electorate of the Palatinate by the artist Karl Hoffacker . Before that, it was in the middle part behind the balcony.

After a fire in the town hall in 1908, the building was expanded to include the south wing, which is also in the neo- baroque style. The houses in front of it at this point were torn down. The tower erected to the left of the main facade was later removed and the lower floors of the tower integrated into the facade.

The town hall saw its last extension in 1961 when the bell tower was attached to the east facade.
