The port Praga (Polish Port Praski ) in Warsaw city district of Praga-Północ is one of three Vistula ports in the Polish capital. The port is no longer used and is to be converted into a modern residential and office complex in the next few years.

history

The port was built in the interwar period of the 20th century in place of an earlier arm of the river on the right (eastward) side of the Vistula. It served as a transshipment and winter ship berth and consisted of three harbor basins, the two larger of which had brick quays - which have been preserved to this day in good condition. The port was not expanded as originally planned. Also, the planned construction of barrages of the river to the north was never realized. The site covered an area of around 50 hectares.

The port has not been used since 1963, from then on the Żerań port, also on the right bank of the river, took over its function. Today, a small area in the entrance area of the port is used by the Warsaw River and Fisheries Police as a berth for their boats. Former transshipment halls are partly used as storage and production halls; other buildings are falling into disrepair. The port facilities are now located between the Warszawa Wschodnia - Warszawa Centralna railway line and the main road Ulica Wybrzeże Szczecińskie and the side streets Ulica Jana Zamoyskiego and Ulica Sokola . In the southeast, behind the railway line, the newly built Narodowy Stadium and Skaryszew Park are located .

In return for the construction of the Świętokrzyski Bridge at the end of the 1990s, the executing company Elektrim was allocated the port facilities for the development of a residential and office area. Due to financial difficulties of the group, the plan could not be implemented for years. But from 2010 the construction plans became more specific. The ownership structure of the developer Elektrim is unclear. The entrepreneur Zygmunt Solorz-Żak is said to be the driving force behind the new building project.

New building project

In late summer 2011, Elektrim announced that the first construction phase at the port would begin in the second half of 2012. First of all, residential units are to be built there. The overall planning, which envisages a construction period of 10 years, concerns residential, office and commercial space of 560,000 square meters. The architecture was designed by the architecture studio JEMS Architekci . The owner of the port area, which has been reduced to 38 hectares, is the company Port Praski Sp.z oo , which initially plans to build 12 seven-storey residential buildings. The HafenCity in Hamburg serves as a model for the area to be developed .
