The port Żerań (Polish: Port Żerański ) is an inland port in the Warsaw district of Białołęka . It is the only one still in use and the largest of the city's three original Vistula ports (the other two were the port of Czerniaków and the port of Praga ). The entire facility covers an area of around 260 hectares and is located between and on the streets Ulica Płochocińska , Ulica Marywilska , Ulica Zarzecze and Ulica Toruńska as well as extensive track systems in the east and the Vistula in the west.

history

The port in Żerań was created after the Second World War in connection with the construction of a modern coal-fired power station and the construction of the Żerań Canal , which connects the Warsaw Vistula with the Zegrze reservoir near Nieporęt. In 1951 the construction of the port at the beginning of the Żerań Canal ( Kanał Żerański ) - around 600 meters from the Vistula - began. In the 1960s, a modern chamber lock was built between the port and the Vistula ( Śluza Żerańska ), which was named after its builder, the engineer Tadeusz Tillinger. The lock chamber has a dimension of 85 × 12 meters, the lock itself is 104 meters long, making it one of the largest of its type in the world. It is controlled from a control tower and used around the clock.

The main port basin, which is used for handling coal, is around 70,000 square meters. Under the main road Ulica Modlińska , which is led over a bridge here, three further harbor basins , only partially fortified with quay walls , can be reached along the canal that has been widened at this point . The Żerań power plant is located at the port and can thus be supplied with coal by water. The port water is heated by the introduction of used process water from the plant. The heat released into the canal leads to an increased fish population there.

development

A structural development of the area and some of the unused port facilities is planned. In addition to restructuring the use of the port, companies should settle there, and housing and water supplies will be expanded.

Among other things, the town planning plans to build a hotel complex, a water park and a congress center with an exhibition hall. At a later date, office buildings and an event arena will also be built. Restaurants, a casino and a viewing platform are to be built in the harbor.
