The cogeneration plant Żerań is one of the largest thermal power stations in Poland . It is located in Białołęka , the northernmost district of Warsaw , and is the second largest power plant in the Polish capital after the Siekierki power plant in the south. The power plant is located on the right bank of the Vistula , which supplies cooling water.

The construction of Żerań began in 1952, and four years later the power plant went online. After a modernization from 1991 to 1997, it now has an electrical output of 350  MW and a thermal output of 1560 MW. Żerań generates both electricity and district heating , so it is a combined heat and power plant . Warsaw has one of the largest district heating networks in the world and, even before Berlin, the longest network in Central Europe.

The Żerań power plant is fired with hard coal and is located at the Żerań port, which was built at the same time . It belongs to the state-owned company PGNiG Termika SA

For a few years now, due to legal regulations, biomass has been burned to a small extent . Biomass and hard coal are burned together in a 315 MW boiler with fluidized bed combustion . In total, 90% coal and 10% biomass are burned in the power plant.

PGNiG Termika plans to build a new, modern gas and steam power plant with district heating extraction. The system is to be built within the existing site and will go into operation as early as 2020. The new cogeneration plant is to go to the Warsaw district heating network with a net output: 490 MWe - thermal output (max.): 326 MWth.

The power plant will be equipped with an F-class gas turbine, a waste heat boiler and a steam turbine. After completion, the previous coal-fired large steam generators in Zeran will be decommissioned; the new system will increase power generation at the site by around 80 percent. The power plant is designed in such a way that the city of Warsaw is supplied with district heating and the costs for district heating remain competitive.
