The red wine variety Calitor used to be widespread in the southern wine-growing regions of France , but is now represented with less than 200 hectares of vineyards in the variety list of the departments of Var , Gard and Hérault as well as on Corsica (→ Viticulture in Corsica ). The Calitor is no longer bred in nurseries but is still permitted in the Côtes de Provence appellation .

The name is derived from the Provencal col (name for the grape stem ) and tor (twisted) and thus describes the strongly angled stem of the grape. The existence of this variety has been documented in writing since the 15th century.

The high-yielding variety produces elegant, light and low-color wines that are used for blends. A very good wine can be made from it on slopes.

The white varieties Calitor Blanc and Calitor Gris are a mutation of Calitor.

See the article Viticulture in France, as well as the list of grape varieties .

Ampelographic varietal characteristics

In ampelography , the habitus is described as follows:

  • The tip of the shoot is very hairy with white wool, with a crimson tinge. The young leaves are slightly hairy and pink in color.
  • The medium-sized leaves are five-lobed and deeply indented. The stalk bay is closed like a lyre. The blade is serrated. The teeth are set very closely compared to the grape varieties. The leaf surface (also called blade) is blistered and rough.
  • The cone-shaped to cylindrical grape is large, long and loose berries. The round berries are medium to large in size and black-blue in color.

The Calitor grape variety ripens around 30 days after the Gutedel and is therefore one of the late-ripening varieties. It is often attacked by downy mildew and gray mold rot. Against powdery mildew , it is quite resistant.

Calitor is a variety of the noble grapevine ( Vitis vinifera ). It has hermaphroditic flowers and is therefore self-fruiting. In viticulture , the economic disadvantage of not having to grow male plants that produce yield is avoided.
