Cuges-les-Pins is a French municipality with 5080 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Bouches-du-Rhône in the region of Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur .

The municipality is located between Aubagne, twelve kilometers away, and Le Beausset, eighteen kilometers away .
history
Around 25,000 BC, a lake formed near today's location. Its size fluctuated: eight thousand years ago the lake still had an area of around 60 hectares, while 3000 years later it was even four square kilometers. In the Middle and Neolithic a few families settled at the lake. During the Copper Age, people settled in caves in the nearby mountains. The discovery of pipes, tiles and other finds testify to the occupation of the area by the Romans. The time of the Great Migration was very unstable and dangerous. Therefore, some families gathered and settled at the Pic du Cuget .
In the 11th century the Castrum de Cuget was built on a hill . As a result, the residents of the village settled at the foot of the castle and thus also became subjects of the lord of the castle. From 1165 the place was dependent on the Counts of Marseille , who were also the Barons of Aubagne. In 1220 the castle - and with it the town - was sold to the Marseilles merchant Guillaume Vivaud, whose family remained the owners until 1435. Then the place was sold to Barthélémy de Basqui and in 1448 sold again to Antoine de Glandèves. His family then remained the owners of Cuges-les-Pins until the French Revolution. The last mistress who inherited the place in 1772 was very conservative and totally rejected the ideas of the revolution. In the summer of 1792 the castle was finally stormed. About three tons of wheat, two tons of capers and more than a thousand hectoliters of wine were looted. But the mistress did not give up and ordered the return of the stolen goods. When the citizens heard of the decree on January 8, 1793, they stormed the castle. The guards did not try to defy them. However, the lady had already fled. On the same day, a castle tower was destroyed by fire. Allegedly this was caused by an uncontrolled fire in the fireplace. When the city of Toulon was besieged by Napoleon in 1793 , the residents of Cuges-les-Pins had to deliver food and equipment. The castle was converted into a hospital in 1794 and 1795. 173 soldiers died here during this time. In 1794 Joseph Bonaparte , Napoleon's brother, and Julie Clary married in Cuges-les-Pins .
