Julie Clary
Marie-Julie Clary-Bonaparte (born December 26, 1771 in Marseille , † April 7, 1845 in Florence ) was Queen of Naples, Sicily and Spain.
She was born the daughter of François Clary (1725–1794), a merchant from Marseille, and his wife Françoise Rose Somis (1737–1815).
On August 1, 1794, she was married to Joseph Bonaparte , Napoleon Bonaparte's older brother, in Cuges-les-Pins near Marseille . Her sister Désirée was engaged to Napoleon Bonaparte, but the marriage did not materialize. She was married to the French Marshal Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte, who ascended the Swedish throne in 1818 as King Charles XIV John .
Through her marriage to Joseph, she became Queen of Naples and Sicily in 1806 and Queen of Spain from 1808 to 1813. The marriage had three children:
- Julie Joséphine Bonaparte (1796–1796)
- Zénaïde Laetitia Julie Bonaparte (1801-1854); ∞ Charles Lucien Bonaparte , a son of Napoleon's brother Lucien
- Charlotte Napoléone Bonaparte (1802-1839); ∞ Napoléon Louis Charles , a son of Napoleon's brother Louis
After Napoleon's disempowerment, her husband had to go into exile in 1815, first to America. They only returned to Europe in 1841 and settled in Florence.
Less than a year after her husband, Julie died in Florence and was buried in the Basilica of Santa Croce.
