Auriol is a French municipality with 11,908 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Bouches-du-Rhône in the region of Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur .
geography
The municipality is located around 25 kilometers northeast of Marseille and around twelve kilometers north of Aubagne . The Huveaune flows through the place.
Neighboring municipalities of Auriol are La Bouilladisse in the north, Trets in the northeast, Saint-Zacharie in the east, Plan-d'Aups-Sainte-Baume (both Département Var ) in the southeast, Gémenos in the south, Roquevaire in the southwest and La Destrousse in the northwest.
history
The Huveaune river provided the basis for agriculture in what is now Auriol. A flourishing city was built here in ancient times. The Auriol treasure from 480 BC tells of this time. Later the place was the retirement home of Roman veterans. The place was first mentioned in 814 under the name Le Polodium . From 1576 to 1584 a wave of plague swept over the city. The city's coat of arms appeared for the first time in 1697. Around 1700 it already had 5000 inhabitants. Then there was another wave of plagues and the population fell. When it rose again in the 19th century, the growth was put back by the establishment of the municipality of La Bouilladisse .

Transport links
At Auriol there is a motorway triangle where the A520 meets the A52 . The A520 ends here after just three kilometers. It begins near the center of Auriol. Thus, the place has a fast transport connection to Marseille.
