Plan-de-Cuques is a French municipality with 10,934 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Bouches-du-Rhône in the region of Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur .
geography
The municipality is located in the southeast of the Bouches-du-Rhône department, four kilometers north of Marseille . It is located one kilometer from the neighboring town of Allauch .
history
The place used to be a resettlement of Allauch and belonged to the municipality. In 1830 attempts were made to incorporate it into Marseille, but it was unsuccessful. In 1822 the elevation of the town's chapel to a parish led to a dispute with the neighboring town of Allauch. After the construction of the Canal de Marseille , the population increased. The establishment of its own Saint-Eloi festival in the place in the subsequent period was a symbol of the social independence of the place. In the 1880s, another attempt to make the community independent began. In 1902 the city councils of what was then Allaucher again advocated independence for the community. Another attempt started in 1913, but it was stopped by the First World War. In 1931 the largest families in the town organized a vote on independence. 405 out of 754 voters voted in favor. However, the project was rejected by the mayor and city council. The case has been referred to higher authorities. Since the new mayor supported the project in 1936, the community finally succeeded in becoming independent in 1937.
