Saint-Savournin is a French municipality with 3361 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Bouches-du-Rhône in the region of Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur .
geography
The municipality is located 28 kilometers northeast of Marseille and between Gardanne and Aubagne . The district La Valentine belongs to Saint-Savournin . Neighboring municipalities are Cadolive (two kilometers away), Mimet (three kilometers) and Gréasque (four kilometers).
history
In the period from the 8th to 10th centuries, the village was attacked and looted frequently by the Saracens. In the 15th and 16th centuries, many immigrants came from the Italian region of Piedmont. Mainly wine and olives were grown, but livestock was also important. In May 1789, before the general councils were convened, complaints books were drawn up in the villages. There were no bloody clashes during the revolution.
Castle
Between 1045 and 1138 a castle was built on the Chaîne de l'Étoile . A tower is still preserved today. However, the castle was demolished and the lords of the village moved into a large country house on the plain.
religion
In the years from 768 to 923 the first church in the village was built. In 1659 the community got its own cemetery on the instructions of the Archbishop of Aix-en-Provence . In 1683 the second church was built on the site of the first church, and in 1865 it was demolished. In 1803 the community was formed. The third church was built in 1851 and consecrated in 1853. In 1873 paintings of the martyrdom of St. Saturnin were placed in it. In 1942 the church was flooded by a storm. In 1963 it was decided to demolish the church. In 1991 construction of the fourth church began.
