Tibouren

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Tibouren is a red wine that is mainly grown in the Var department in Provence . In the west of Liguria there is another growing area for the Italian DOC wine Rossese di Dolceacqua , which is also made from the grape variety. It is usually developed into rosé wine (sometimes also single-variety ), which exude a light herbal scent and should be drunk young. It is also used as a table grape . Tibouren is part of the Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC for short) wines Côtes de Provence , Palette and Coteaux Varois en Provence .

According to the French ampelograph Pierre Galet , Tibouren may have come from the Middle East and was introduced by the Greeks in ancient times . According to local accounts, it was brought to the area around Saint-Tropez by a naval captain named Antiboul at the end of the 17th century . That is why the variety is also called Antiboulen. However, Antiboul is also the medieval name of the city of Antibes . A relationship with the Rossese grape variety cannot be ruled out.

The high-yielding Tibouren is quite capricious in its yields as it is very susceptible to disease. It is therefore only used to a limited extent. Currently (as of 2007) approx. 445 hectares of vineyards are planted with this variety (source ONIVINS,). Only clone number 1063 is recognized for viticulture .

In Armenia, there is also a gray-grape variety called Tibouren Gris and a variety with white berries called Tibouren Blanc . A relationship could not yet be proven.

Ampelographic varietal characteristics

In ampelography , the habitus is described as follows:

  • The shoot tip is open. It is very hairy whitish with a slightly reddish tinge. The yellowish, slightly bronze-colored (anthocyanin) young leaves are slightly woolly hairy.
  • The large leaves (see also the leaf shape article ) are five-lobed (sometimes even seven- to nine-lobed) and strongly cupped. The stalk bay closed like a lyre. The leaf margin is finely serrated. The teeth are small compared to the grape varieties. The leaf surface (also called blade) is blistered and rough.
  • The cylindrical to conical grape is medium to large and shouldered. The slightly oval berries are medium-sized and red to blue-black in color.

The grape variety sprouts relatively early and makes it sensitive to late spring frosts. Tibouren is sensitive to downy mildew , the anthracnose . It also tends to trickle down .

Tibouren ripens approx. 12-15 days after the Gutedel and is therefore one of the early- ripening red grape varieties.
