history

The earliest traces of human presence are stone tools found in the Arc Plain. Several settlements were discovered in the mountain ranges from the following period. Although there are no written documents from this period, parts of the language can still be found in today's place names. During the Roman period, the Oppida were romanised in the hills, but the plain in particular underwent a major change. Agriculture was very much represented, the remains of twenty farms from this period can still be found today. However, three industrial plants have also been preserved. The Roman road from Fréjus to Aix ran through the town . There were also paths into the Huveaune valley and the Alps. In the period that followed, Roman agriculture continued. A possible conquest by the Franks is controversial. In 950 Arlulfe de Marseille became master of the place. Around the year 1000, a castrum was built on the Sainte-Croix hill . The local parish church was also built on the former Roman road. During the Renaissance, the population of Provence recovered. There is evidence of glass production in Pourcieux since 1444. At the beginning of the 15th century the old castrum was abandoned and a new castle was built instead. In addition, a private chapel was built for the gentleman's family next to the castle. However, nothing remains of the chapel. In a contract from 1513, the place was no longer referred to as a "villa", but as Bourg, so Pourcieux had grown into a small town. Therefore a post office was built. The church was subordinate to the Saint-Victor Abbey in Marseille , but a pastor from the Archdiocese of Aix-en-Provence was responsible for the community. In 1753 the glazier was closed. A wealthy MP from Aix settled here. His “country house” became the third castle in Pourcieux. During the revolution, on September 8, 1790, the complete abolition of feudal rule was proclaimed in the church. The son of the former gentleman refused to swear allegiance to the constitution, was arrested on August 11, 1792 in Paris and murdered on September 2. On November 29, 1880 the Trets - Carnoules railway line was opened, which also ran through Pourcieux.
