Forcalqueiret is a French commune with 2,990 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the Var department in the region of Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur . It belongs to the canton of La Roquebrussanne in the Arrondissement of Brignoles .
geography
Forcalqueiret is located in the Issole Valley, which is surrounded by wooded hills . Brignoles is about ten kilometers by road to the north behind the Les Brasques range of hills . It is about 40 kilometers to the south to the department prefecture in Toulon and the Mediterranean coast. If you follow the Issole over its confluence with the Caramy and the Argens to its confluence with the sea, you will reach Fréjus after about 75 kilometers .
history
In 1030, the place was first mentioned in traditional sources as Furnum Calcarium or Calcherium . The name refers to the lime kilns that were operated in the High Middle Ages.
The village was under the rule of the Counts of Marseille, and later those of Agoult , Vins , Forbin and Villeneuve. In 1744 a marquisate was established.
The castle belonged to the lord of Vins, Hubert de Garde, who saved the life of the Prince of Anjou, later Henri III in La Rochelle . The fortress withstood the sieges of Lesdiguières and Charles V.

Culture and sights
The ruined castle of Castellas , the former village of Forcalqueiret from the 12th to 14th centuries, is classified as Inscrit Monument Historique and is considered one of the most remarkable architectural monuments of Provence verte .
