Bras is a French commune with 2,698 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the Var department in the region of Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur .

geography

Bras is located 15 kilometers northwest of Brignoles in the center of the Var department in the west of the forested hills of Les Brasques .

The Cauron , which flows into the Argens a little later , flows from a south-westerly direction through the gently undulating landscape, which is characterized by vines, arable farming and oak forests. In the Tombereau waterfall, 3 km northwest of Bras, the Argens falls 10 m deep, just before the confluence with the Cauron.

The crystal clear, small but abyssal lakes of the Gours Bénits in the west are of volcanic origin. Its water is said to have turned red during the earthquake that destroyed Lisbon in 1754.

The climate is characterized by Mediterranean and Alpine elements.

history

Processed flint stones are evidence of human settlement in the area in prehistoric times. During the Battle of Pourrières in 102 BC. BC, in which Gaius Marius defeated the Cimbri and Teutons , Bras served as a base of operations. A prehistoric wall was uncovered to the south of the Signal , and a place of worship existed on the other side of the mountain. Pottery, coins, a sarcophagus and parts of a cippe were found.

In the Middle Ages, Bras appears for the first time in 1015 as Brachium or Castrum de Braz Vel Bracio in the documents. In 1241 Raymond Bérenger received the town of Bras from the Bishop of Riez as a fief. Later the rule went to the Order of Malta and the Templars .
