Vinon-sur-Verdon ( Provence Vinon-sus-Verdon or Vinoun-sus-Verdoun ) is a commune with 4233 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the Var department in the region of Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur . It belongs to the canton of Saint-Maximin-la-Sainte-Baume in the Arrondissement of Brignoles .
The municipality is located in the Verdon Regional Nature Park , barely seven kilometers from the Cadarache nuclear research center .
history
Traces of early settlement in the area lead to the Gallic-Roman era. On the right bank of the Verdon are the remains of a Roman villa with mosaic decoration and inscriptions.
The place was first mentioned in 1074 as Vino or Vinonum . Bérenger, Count of Provence , gave the place to the Knights Templar as a fief in 1238 , who held the rule until the French Revolution . In 1591 the Château Vinon resisted the troops of Charles Emanuel I, Duke of Savoy .

Culture and sights
- The airfield of Vinon-sur-Verdon is home to the Association Aéronautique Verdon Alpilles , the oldest gliding center in France
- The Moulin de Saint André , a renovated former mill on the banks of the Verdon , houses the tourist office, a theater, a cinema and a concert hall.
