Tavernes ( Provence tavernas or Taverno ) is a French municipality with 1399 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the Var department in the region of Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur . It belongs to the canton of Flayosc in the Arrondissement of Brignoles .

geography

Tavernes is located in the north-west of the department of Var, 30 km north of Brignoles on a fertile, hilly plain where vines and olives are grown. In the north of the municipality is the Forêt du Gros Bois , through the plain flows the Ruisseau des Ecrevisses ( Krebsbach ) and some watercourses that do not carry water all year round due to the sometimes quite dry climate.

history

Tavernes appears for the first time in 979 as Villa Taverne in the springs. In the 11th century the locality of Tavernas is spoken of. Tavernes was a fief of Pontevès , later Cadarache , which passed to the Counts of Provence , the Simiane and Condé-Soubise families .

Attractions

The pilgrimage chapel, Chapelle Notre-Dame-de-Bellevue , to which a Way of the Cross has led since the 19th century , is 637 m above sea level on one of the highest points in the municipality. From there you have a wide view of the landscape in the plain.
