Eric Mervyn Lindsay (born January 26, 1907 in Portadown , County Armagh , Northern Ireland , † July 27, 1974 in Armagh ) was an Irish astronomer .

Lindsay was the child of Richard and Susan Lindsay and went to King's Hospital School in Dublin . He then attended Queen's University of Belfast , where he received his B.Sc. and in 1929 the M.Sc. received. He later went to Harvard University , where he received his Ph.D.

Lindsay later went to South Africa for further astronomical studies and married Sylvia Mussells from Cape Town . In 1937 he went back to Ireland and was director of the Armagh Observatory until his death from a heart attack .

Lindsay became known less for his scientific results than for his political influence on astronomy. For example, he persuaded the Irish government and the Harvard College Observatory to establish a telescope at the Boyden Observatory in Bloemfontein , South Africa to catalog the southern skies. He also played an important role in founding the Armagh Planetarium.

Lindsay and his wife Sylvia had a son, Derek Michael Lindsay (* 1944). Derek became a professor of chemistry in New York City.

The lunar crater Lindsay is named after him.
