Vérignon ( Provence Verinhon or Verignoun ) is a French municipality with 10 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the Var department in the region of Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur . It belongs to the canton of Flayosc in the Arrondissement of Brignoles .

geography

Vérignon lies at an altitude of 850 m at the foot of the Plan de Canjuers plateau in the middle of an oak forest, which is known as one of the most beautiful in Provence. Since 1970, 1,500 hectares of the common land have been requisitioned as a military training area.

history

The Plan de Canjuers plateau, on the edge of which the municipality lies, preserves in its name, derived from Campus Julii , the memory of the passage of Julius Caesar's army . In Roman times, the great road connecting Fréjus and Riez ran through Vérignon. Four ancient milestones were discovered. Numerous prehistoric fossils were also found on the plain, most of which are kept in the castle of Vérignon.

According to Raoul Bérenguier, the Blacas, lords of Aups , settled in Vérignon around the year 1000 and built their castle there, the ruins of which can be found near the castle from the 18th century.

population

With 10 inhabitants, Vérignon is the smallest independent municipality in the Var department. In the 19th century, around 120 people still lived in the village.

Attractions

  • The ruins of the medieval castle are enclosed by a wall, which is surrounded by round towers and a rectangular house in the north of the complex. Loopholes were used to defend the castle. At the beginning of the 18th century, the castle was given up due to lack of water and lack of comfort.
  • The new castle cannot be visited. It was built at the beginning of the 18th century when the old castle was abandoned. The rectangular building is laid out in two levels, on which there is an attic with a rain roof. On the back of the main building, two side wings protrude at right angles to frame the main courtyard. The castle belonged to the Blacas family until 1947.
  • The Mariae Himmelfahrt church is the former chapel of the feudal castle. Under an altar dedicated to the Virgin Mary is the grave of the Blacas family.
  • The Notre-Dame de Liesse pilgrimage chapel is located at an altitude of 991 m between the parishes of Aups and Vérignon.
  • The Saint Priest chapel is located at 1066 m on the mountain range on which Notre-Dame de Liesse and the Oppidum des Verrucini are also located. The chapel was built in 1098.

Personalities
