New Zealand American Football Federation Incorporated (NZAFF) is the governing body for American football in New Zealand . Together with Tonga , Australia and American Samoa they form IFAF Oceania , a continental federation of the International Federation of American Football (IFAF).
history
Although American football has been played in New Zealand since the 1980s, the governing body was not founded until 2008. On April 3, 2009, the NZAFF was recognized by the government organization Sport New Zealand and in 2011 it was accepted as a National Sports Association. On April 16, 2010 the association was registered as a corporation .
structure
The umbrella organization currently consists of three regional associations: American Football Auckland (AFA), American Football Wellington (AFW) and American Football Canterbury (AFC). A fourth regional association, American Football Central Plateau (AFCP), is currently seeking recognition.
National teams
As a member of IFAF, the umbrella organization is allowed to provide national teams for adults and U19s, for men and women, and for American football and flag football . A New Zealand national American football team is currently only available for adult men in flag and tackle football and for U19 men in tackle football. The national teams are nicknamed "Steelblacks".
