The Svenska Amerikansk Fotbollförbundet (SAFF) is the Swedish American football federation. After the first American football club in Sweden was founded in 1982 with the Danderyd Mean Machines , the SAFF was founded in 1984. In 1985 the first, still unofficial, final of the Swedish championship was played. The Lidingö Pink Chargers defeated Danderyd 6-0. From 1986 the championship final was officially played. In Uppsala Lidingö won again, this time they defeated the Glue Harbor Buccaneers 15: 6.

In 1991 the highest Swedish league, the Super Series , was founded. Among them there are currently Division I (also called Superettan ) and Division II, which is divided into four regions. In addition, in 1991 one was admitted to the Riksidrottsförbundet , the Swedish sports association.

The men's national team was European champion in 2005 , beating the German team in the final in Malmö 16: 7, after shortly before, at the World Games 2005 in Duisburg , they had lost out with 6:20. At the 2007 World Cup, they finished fourth. They lost the game for bronze against Germany 7-0.

In addition to the men's leagues, there is also a youth game, which is divided into the age groups U19, U17, U15 and U13 (pee-wees). The juniors are reigning vice European champions. In 2008 they lost the final against the German juniors 6: 9.

On October 4, 2008, the Swedish women's national team played for the first women's international match in Europe in Helsinki against Finland . Sweden lost 0:64.
