With 7,981 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), L'Île-Saint-Denis is one of the smallest communities in the French department of Seine-Saint-Denis in the Île-de-France region . The municipality was created at the end of the 19th century from the merger of four municipalities: l'Île Saint-Denis , l'Île du Châtelier , l'Île des Vannes and l'Île du Javeau . The community is located on the Seine island Île Saint-Denis in a loop of the Seine about ten kilometers north of the center of the French capital Paris . In France, only the municipality of Béhuard shares the peculiarity of being completely on a river island.
The inhabitants are called Ilo-Dionysia or Ilodionysia .
politics
Until 2001, L'Île-Saint-Denis was the stronghold of the French Communist Party . 2001 was then Green Michel Bourgain as mayor elected. He resigned for health reasons in June 2016. The majority candidate, Mohamed Gnabaly , was elected as the new mayor on July 7, 2016.
traffic
A major problem for the community is the inharmonized urbanization. To solve the resulting traffic problems, line 1 of the Paris tram was extended to the center of L'Île-Saint-Denis and beyond to Asnières-sur-Seine / Gennevilliers in 2012 . There, lying in close proximity Gennevilliers - - Metro station Asnières Courtilles the Paris Métro Line 13 . There is also a connection to the railway network ( RER , line D and Transilien , line H) via the neighboring train station in Saint-Denis .
