Mondine Garcia (* 1936 in Saint-Ouen (Seine-Saint-Denis) ; † December 29, 2010 ibid) was a French jazz guitarist in the tradition of Django Reinhardt .

Live and act

Garcia was one of the gypsy jazz guitarists who formed the second generation of musicians who played in the tradition of Django Reinhardt. He belonged to the Garcia family of Kalé musicians and had been playing musette music since he was ten ; he was known in France as le roi de la valse (King of the Waltz). Since 1960 he has been playing gypsy jazz in the legendary Café Chope de Puces near the Porte de Clignancourt in Paris , initially with the band Les Manouches (with his cousin Niglo Adel as rhythm guitarist and various bassists and violinists such as Spatzo Adel). Garcia became the model for numerous younger guitarists such as Tchavolo Schmitt , Biréli Lagrène , Stochelo Rosenberg and Romane through his regular Saturday appearances in the café . In the late 1970s to early 1980s, he and his son Ninine formed a gypsy jazz / bossa nova duo called Les Manouches de St Ouen . Between 1962 and 1983 he made several recordings such as the LP Les Manouches , which was released by Le Kiosque d'Orphée ; In 2007 these were partially re-released as CD Les Manouches: Rare Recordings of Gypsy Music 1969-1983 . Garcia performed in the Chope de Puces with his son and grandchildren Rocky and Mundine Garcia until the late 2000s .
