Jean-Marie Cavada (born February 24, 1940 in Épinal , Département Vosges ) is a French journalist and politician . He was a member of the European Parliament from 2004 to 2019 .

Live and act

Cavada became a journalist for RTF in 1960 . In 1969 he switched to France Inter as a news presenter and specialist in European issues, from 1987 he produced and hosted the program “ La Marche du siècle ” on Antenne 2 , and from 1998 to 2001 he was President of Radio France .

He was first elected to the European Parliament in 2004 as a member of the Union pour la démocratie française (UDF) and representative of the constituency of south-west France . There he sat until 2009 in the parliamentary group of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE), of which he was a board member from 2005 to 2009. From 2004 to February 2005, Cavada was Vice-Chairman of the Committee on International Trade , then Chairman of the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs . After the UDF split in 2007, Cavada and his European Parliament colleagues Janelly Fourtou and Claire Gibault founded the small party Alliance citoyenne pour la démocratie en Europe / Avenir démocrate , of which Cavada was chairman. In January 2008 he resigned from his committee chairmanship in the EU Parliament to take part in the French local elections. He won a seat on the city council of Paris, where he represented the 12th arrondissement until his resignation in December 2010 .

In the run-up to the 2009 European elections, Cavada joined the Nouveau Center (NC), which ran for this election in alliance with the conservative UMP . Jean-Marie Cavada was re-elected to the European Parliament, where he was a board member of the Christian Democratic Group of the European People's Party (EPP) for the legislative period until 2014 . He was a member of the Committee on Culture and Education and was a delegate for relations with the countries of the Andean Community and in the Euro-Latin American Parliamentary Assembly. Cavada has campaigned for the simplification of international adoptions within the EU.

From December 2011 to December 2016, Cavada was President of the European Movement France and since 2014 Vice President of the European Movement International .

In 2014, Cavada was elected to the European Parliament for a further legislative period via the L'Alliance list of the pro-European center parties UDI and MoDem . There he sat again in the liberal ALDE parliamentary group until 2019 . He was the deputy chairman of the Legal Affairs Committee . Until September 2014 he was deputy chairman of the party alliance Union des démocrates et indépendants (UDI), to which the Nouveau Center had merged with other parties from the center and right center. Then he left NC and UDI and joined the entrepreneur Denis Payre's new Nous Citoyens party . He was immediately elected to succeed Payre as chairman of this small party. At the end of June 2015 he left Nous Citoyens again and founded the new Génération Citoyens party .

In June 2015, in the Legal Affairs Committee of the European Parliament, Cavada proposed restricting the freedom of panorama . In his opinion, their commercial use primarily serves "American monopolies such as Facebook or Wikimedia ", while a restriction to non-commercial use not only benefits copyright holders but also consumers. In Cavada's country of origin, France, freedom of panorama is not yet provided . The change was ultimately rejected by 502 to 40 votes, and Cavada himself voted against it.
