Claire Gibault (born October 31, 1945 in Le Mans ) is a French conductor and politician . As a member of the UDF, she was a member of the European Parliament from 2004 to 2009 .

Life

Gibault first learned the violin and then studied at the Paris Conservatory . She graduated in 1968 with a Premier Prix in harmony, fugue, counterpoint, musical aesthetics and history and in 1969 with a Premier Prix in orchestral conducting.

As a conductor, she led various orchestras worldwide, including the Berlin Philharmonic (1997). From 1991 to 1998 she worked at the Opéra National de Lyon . In 1995 she was the first woman to conduct the La Scala orchestra in Milan . She worked as Claudio Abbado's assistant at the Royal Opera House in London, at La Scala in Milan and at the Vienna State Opera . From 2000 to 2002 she was musical director of the Fondazione Musica Per Roma . Gibault conducted the world premieres of Fabio Vacchi's operas Les oiseaux de passage (1998) and Il letto della storia (2003). In 2005 she conducted the recording of Vacchi's music for Patrice Chéreau's film Gabrielle - The Love of My Life . Since 2011 she has directed the Paris Mozart Orchestra, which she founded. As a guest conductor, she also played B. with the Hallé Orchestra in Manchester, the Royal Scottish National Orchestra or the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra London, with which she recorded works by Beethoven and Schubert.

As a representative of the pro-European center party UDF, Gibault was a member of the European Parliament from 2004 to 2009 , where she belonged to the Group of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe . She was a member of the Committee on Women's Rights and Gender Equality and the Committee on Culture and Education as well as a delegate in the EU-Bulgaria Joint Parliamentary Committee. After the dissolution of the UDF, she joined the small liberal party Alliance citoyenne pour la démocratie en Europe - Avenir démocrate , which is headed by her European Parliament colleague Jean-Marie Cavada . Since 2010 she has been a member of the Conseil économique, social et environnemental , a French constitutional body that participates in the legislative process in an advisory capacity.
