biography
Vacchi ( spoken wa-ki ) studied with Giacomo Manzoni , Franco Donatoni and Tito Gotti. In 1974 he attended courses at the Berkshire Music Center in Tanglewood / USA. He won the "Koussevitzky Prize in Composition".
For his “Soupirs de Genève” for eleven solo strings, Vacchi won first prize at the Gaudeamus competition in the Netherlands in 1976. In 1979 and 1981 the Venice Biennale dedicated special concerts to his work. In 1982 Vacchi's first opera "Girotondo", based on a text by Arthur Schnitzler , premiered at the Florence Music Festival.
In 1990 the Teatro Comunale of Bologna premiered its opera “Il Viaggio”. In 1993, “La Station thermale” followed in Lyon , based on a play by Carlo Goldoni . In December 1995 Vacchi conducted his pantomime "Faust", based on Heinrich Heine , at the Teatro Comunale Bologna. In 1998 the Lyon National Opera and the Teatro Comunale di Bologna performed his opera "Les Oiseaux de Passage".
For the 2005/2006 season, Vacchi was commissioned by the Milan Opera La Scala for “Teneke”, based on a text by the Turkish writer Yashar Kemal. The opera houses in Madrid and Lisbon entrusted him with the task of completing a previously unpublished opera fragment by Manuel de Falla , "El Fuego Fatuo".
The Salzburg Festival honored Vacchi twice by awarding commissioned works: In July 2000, the Orchester de Paris under Ivan Fischer played “Tre veglie” for mezzo-soprano, violoncello and orchestra in the Small Festival Hall. In August 2006 the Vienna Philharmonic under Riccardo Muti premiered “Giusta Armonia” in the Großer Festspielhaus . Vacchi's instrumental works include: Luoghi Immaginari (1987–1992), the cantata Sacer Sanctus for choir and instruments (1997) and Notturno concertante for guitar and orchestra (1994).
In 2001 Vacchi composed the film music for "Il mestiere delle armi" by Ermanno Olmi. For this he received the “David di Donatello” award. He received a nomination for “David di Donatello” for the film music of “Centochiodi” (2007).
