Federal Coast Guard
The Federal Coast Guard , as a coordination network of federal authorities, forms the Coast Guard of the Federal Republic of Germany .
tasks
The authorities involved agree on the deployment plan for the vehicles and control the current operations for the North and Baltic Seas in the See Situation Center of the Maritime Security Center Cuxhaven (MSZ). The Baltic Sea Coast Guard Center in Neustadt was dissolved.
Responsibilities
The coast guard includes vehicles from the following federal ministries, authorities and federal agencies:
Competent authorities / institutions: | Organization / administrative branch: | Parent Ministry: |
---|---|---|
Federal Police Directorate Bad Bramstedt | Federal Police (BPol) | Federal Ministry of the Interior (BMI) |
Kiel and Aurich branch offices of the General Directorate for Waterways and Shipping (GDWS) | Federal Waterways and Shipping Administration (WSV) | Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMVI) |
Sea control unit ( main customs offices ) | Federal Customs Administration (BZV) | Federal Ministry of Finance (BMF) |
Federal Agency for Agriculture and Food (BLE) | Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL) |
Regardless of this organization, the authority to issue instructions remains with the relevant authorities, namely the Federal Police , the water customs ( main customs offices ), the waterways and shipping authorities and the Federal Agency for Agriculture and Food.
vehicles
Numerous ships and boats from the institutions mentioned are used (including BPOL: six ships; customs: eight customs boats and four customs cruisers; WSV: four multi-purpose ships for seagoing purposes , BLE : three fishing protection boats).
The vehicles are optically uniform (“Coast Guard” lettering, the black, red and gold marking on the ship's hull and the coast guard's coat of arms), but the basic colors are different. The basic color of the vehicles of the Federal Police and Customs is blue (formerly green), those of the Waterways and Shipping Administration are black and usually with white bodies and those of the Federal Agency for Agriculture and Food are black with gray bodies and the additional inscription "Fischereischutz".
With the introduction of the Potsdam class in spring 2019, the Federal Police had ships with deck armament for the first time in 20 years. The three 86 m long ships will be equipped with an MK110 caliber 57 millimeter ship gun from BAE Systems . Smaller units sometimes carry submachine guns and / or assault rifles in addition to the officers' normal service weapons .
Schleswig-Holstein special solution
In addition to the Coast Guard coordination group, Schleswig-Holstein had an independent coast guard from the State of Schleswig-Holstein from 1995 until its dissolution at the end of 2005 as an association of the Water Police , Office for Rural Areas (ALR) and State Office for Nature and Environment. Since the pooling of competencies under a common roof at federal level failed due to resistance from other federal states, Schleswig-Holstein decided to dissolve this association.
