The Potsdam class is a series of three federal police force ships . It was commissioned in 2016 and will replace the Sassnitz- class boats that have already been decommissioned and the Bredstedt .

history

After the Bundestag secured the financing for the three ships in autumn 2015, the construction contract was awarded to the Fassmer shipyard in Berne on December 12, 2016 . While the first ship, the Potsdam , was completely built in Berne, the order for the shell construction of the other two ships was awarded to the Western Baltija Shipbuilding yard in Klaipėda ( Lithuania ) for capacity reasons . Their hulls were then towed to Germany for completion . As part of the christening of Potsdam on December 14, 2018, it became known that, contrary to the original plan, the ships would each be armed with a Mk 110 57mm cannon . This was justified with the expanded range of tasks of the coast guard and the need to be able to stop large ships if necessary.

The type ship Potsdam was ceremonially put into service on July 22, 2019 in Neustadt in Holstein as the first of these three mission ships.

description

The mission ships are each 86.02 m long and 13.42 m wide.

The main drive consists of two Wärtsilä - diesel engines type 12V 26F, each with 4,080 kW power per its torque via a ZF transmission on a variable pitch transmitted. Two on-board units from Caterpillar , each with an output of 820 kW, increase the drive power via electric traction motors that are flanged to the gears of the main motors, which can also work as generators . Each ship also has two transverse thrusters for better controllability .

The engines are equipped with exhaust aftertreatment systems and meet the TIER III emissions standard and the ECA standard for the North and Baltic Seas . In terms of design, they also have all the criteria that are necessary for the award of the Blue Angel .

The ships have a helicopter landing deck on which the largest helicopter of the Federal Police, the Super Puma from Airbus Helicopters , can land. They also have special container spaces for mission equipment and control boats that can be used up to a wave height of four meters. By 2021, the ships are also to be armed with a cannon and two machine guns.
