The Marinha do Brasil is the navy of the armed forces of Brazil . With a strength of 60,000 soldiers, including naval aviators and the approximately 15,000 men of the Brazilian marines , it is the largest and best-equipped naval force in Latin America .

task

The Brazilian Navy is supposed to protect the territory of Brazil. This also includes the 200-mile zone with oil and gas reserves.

history

The Brazilian Navy was involved in Brazil's war of independence from the former colonial power Portugal . The majority of Portuguese ship capacities were withdrawn from Brazil after independence and the country built up its own powerful navy in the following years.

The Marinha do Brasil was involved in the Argentine-Brazilian War ( 1825 to 1828 ), the Triple Alliance War in Paraguay (1864 to 1870) and other rebellions, such as the Revolta da Chibata , in the history of the country.

World wars

The Brazilian Navy took both the first as the Second World War in part. She was involved in the submarine war and went on patrols in the Atlantic.

International missions

On February 15, 2011, the Brazilian Navy took over command of the multinational Maritime Task Force (MTF) of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL). In November of the same year, the Brazilian Ministry of Defense dispatched the União Niterói-class frigate with a crew of 239 men and air capabilities to support the Lebanese Coast Guard.

perspective

In 2009 the Navy released a procurement plan that forms the basis for modernizing the Brazilian Navy. According to the plan, the number of warships is to be nearly doubled by 2030. The country is pursuing its own maritime armaments projects. In 2005, for example, a Brazilian company presented the submarine Tikuna . The plan is to build a separate class of diesel-powered submarines that can later be converted to nuclear power. The reactor prototype RENAP-11 (Reactor Naval de Potência (PWR) de 11 Megawatts) is already in operation onshore. In the medium term, a total of 15 diesel-electric and six nuclear-powered boats are to be put into operation.

The consortium Águas Azuis ( thyssenkrupp Marine Systems , Embraer Defense & Security and Atech) was commissioned by the Brazilian Navy in 2019 to build four ships of the corvette class Tamandaré (CCT). The ships are built in Itajaí , Brazil , in the state of Santa Catarina; the technical know-how comes from the Thyssen-Krupp shipyard in Kiel. The order is worth a total of 1.8 billion euros. The corvettes are to be handed over to Marinha do Brasil between 2025 and 2028.

structure

Flagship of Marinha do Brasil is the aircraft carrier São Paulo , the total of the second aircraft carrier in the history of the Brazilian Navy. The NAe São Paulo was decommissioned in February 2017 and was replaced by the HMS Ocean (L12) in June 2018 . The frame- rigged three- master Cisne Branco (Portuguese: cisne branco: white swan; NV stands for navio veleiro: sailing ship) is the training ship of the Brazilian Navy and is primarily used for representational purposes. Due to the large and branched river system in Brazil, the Navy has a large number of patrol boats and light combat ships. They are supposed to secure the country's inland waters. In the area of inland waters, the Navy supports the Brazilian army and therefore also has amphibious vehicles and battle tanks .

Fleets

The naval forces are divided into the 1st fleet and the 2nd fleet.

Naval aviators

From 1960 to 2001 the Navy had the aircraft carrier Minas Gerais in use. Despite modernizations, its turbines brought the ship to only about 20 knots and the flying components were permanently inadequate. The Minas Gerais was replaced by the São Paulo , which entered service in 2001 . In 1998, Brazil bought a number of Kuwaiti A-4 Skyhawks for its navy and began converting them. They were equipped with radar (EL / M-2032 from IAI / Elta), data link , new instruments and expanded armament options (air-to-air guided missiles Derby, Piranha and Python IV , laser-guided bombs). Since 2013, the main fighter jet of the naval aviation has been the A-4 Skyhawk from McDonnell-Douglas , which is also used by the Argentinian neighbors.

The flying component of the Navy is mainly provided by helicopters of all sizes for different tasks.

Marine infantry

The Marine Infantry Corpo de Fuzileiros Navais (CFN) has a strength of 15,000 men and is equipped with numerous weapon systems for amphibious and land use. Marine infantry is also used on the vast Brazilian river system. The force is armed with a wide range of vehicles and medium infantry. She is trained in sea landing operations. Marines are also used to fight crime within Brazil.

fleet

The Navy has larger combat ships of various classes for use on the high seas. These are u. a.
