Itajaí is a city in the Brazilian state of Santa Catarina on the Atlantic coast at the mouth of the Itajaí .
history
The city was founded on June 15, 1860 . A large part of the population at that time were German and Portuguese emigrants. The establishment of a Belgian colony in 1841 - 1842 failed.
Economy and port
The port of Itajaí is the largest port in the state of Santa Catarina and the second largest in Brazil. The nearest airport is Navegantes Airport near Navegantes .
Itajaí has a seaport operated by a private company. From here, goods from the state of Santa Catarina are shipped all over the world. It is primarily chicken meat in refrigerated containers, mechanical and electronic products, meat and meat products. In 2013, 9.5 million tons and 799,300 TEUs of container units TEU were handled. When it comes to imports, mechanical and electronic products are the first to be mentioned, followed by textile and chemical products. The TECONVI container terminal is one of the largest terminals in the state. In December 2008 the port facilities of Itajaí were badly damaged by heavy rains. For this reason, too, cargo throughput decreased in 2008 compared to the previous year. Since 2007 there has also been a PORTONAVE container terminal on the opposite side of the river in Navegantes, which is now in direct competition with TECONVI. This terminal is designed to handle more than 1 million container units TEU.
