The Foudre- class is a class of dock landing ships in the French Navy . The French name is Transport de chalands de débarquement (TCD), in German about landing craft transporter . The NATO type designation is Landing Ship Dock (LSD).

The Foudre class consisted of the two ships Foudre and Siroco , which differ slightly. Both belonged to the Force d'action navale (FAN), the surface operations association of the French Navy. The names refer to meteorological phenomena ( Foudre = lightning; Siroco = Scirocco).

The Foudre was sold to Chile in 2011 and has since served as Sargento Aldea (LSDH-91) in the Chilean Navy , the Siroco (G-40) followed in 2015 as Bahia to Brazil .

history

Marine national

Laid down in 1986, Foudre was launched in 1988 and entered service in 1990. Siroco followed eight years behind.

Both ships have participated in numerous operations including

  • Support of the "Extraction Force" (XFOR) in Macedonia during the Kosovo War 1999 ( Foudre )
  • Support of the international protection force INTERFET in East Timor ( Siroco 1999)
  • Surveillance of the West African coast as part of Operation "Corymbe" ( Siroco 1999, 2004, 2006, 2007, 2009; Foudre 2000, 2003, 2006/7, 2009, 2010)
  • Evacuation of Foreign Citizens from Lebanon ( Siroco 2006)
  • Support for relief efforts after the 2010 Haiti earthquake ( Siroco )

In addition, both ships were used for presence tasks in the Indian Ocean under the leadership of the local naval command ALINDIA.

Sale to South America

In 2011 the Foudre was sold to Chile and decommissioned on December 22, 2011 by the French Navy. A day later, the ship was handed over to the Chilean Navy and put into service by them as Sargento Aldea (LSDH-91). Foudre was replaced by the addition of the third ship of the Mistral class Dixmude . The new home port of Sargento Aldea has been Talcahuano since 2013 .

The ship was named after Sargento Juan de Dios Aldea Fonseca, who was fatally wounded at the side of the Chilean naval hero Arturo Prat in the saltpeter war in 1879.

The Siroco was sold to Brazil in 2015. Minor modifications were made in France, so the 30 mm guns were replaced by 20 mm guns. At the end of the year she was handed over to the Brazilian Navy , renamed Bahia (G-40) and commissioned in Toulon on March 10, 2016 . She ran from there on March 17th in the direction of her future home port Rio de Janeiro .

tasks

The task of the Foudre- class ships is to use amphibious means to land troops in the strength of a mechanized regiment over unprepared beaches and in unsafe areas. As a secondary task, they can provide logistical support for the fleet, for evacuations and for humanitarian aid operations. They can be used to lead an association.

Dock and storage space

Landing craft rapiers of the CDIC type

The main design feature of the Foudre class is the corrugated deck with an area of 1732 m², which extends over three quarters of the ship's length. This dock is used to accommodate various types of smaller vehicles. Eight to ten landing craft of the type CTM or two of the type CDIC can be carried at the same time. The normal load is one CDIC and four CTM. Instead of these landing craft, other boats can also be transported.

Another storage space of 1000 m² is available for the storage of vehicles and freight. It can be loaded via a loading ramp located on the port side . There is an elevator with a load capacity of 52 t for transport between the decks.

Helicopter facilities

The ships can carry four medium or two heavy helicopters in a hangar . There are two helipads on the landing deck of the Foudre . A third is located a little lower above the rear part of the well deck that can be opened. The landing deck on the Siroco is slightly longer.

Further equipment

Both ships are equipped for the command of naval units and amphibious operations and can accommodate the necessary military staff.

The ship hospital is set up like a marine rescue center to care for a larger number of patients. It comprises two operating theaters , two intensive care beds , one of which is for burn injuries, and several laboratories.
