Data link

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A connection between two or more terminals for data transmission is referred to as a data link or data connection . When speaking of a data link , a connection via data cable or wireless , i.e. via radio or optical, is meant. Today, information is transmitted almost exclusively digitally . A corresponding protocol is required for data exchange , which must be known to all terminals.

Types

There are basically three different types of data links:

  • full-duplex : data flow possible in both directions at the same time.
  • half-duplex : data flow possible in both directions, but not simultaneously.
  • simplex : data flow in one direction only.

Examples of data links are all types of networks in data technology , including applications as diverse as file servers , aircraft control , remote-controlled robots or space probes or modern guided missile systems .

In Bundeswehr and NATO , the term Tactical Data Link ( Tactical Data Link ) is used. The relevant NATO Standard Operation Procedures (NSOP) are developed by the Information Systems Sub-Committee (ISSC) - Data Link Working Group ( DLWG ). The specification of tactical data links is defined in accordance with the NATO Standardization Agreement STANAG .
