The Inhaúma class is a class of four corvettes in the Brazilian Navy .
General
The ships were developed by the Brazilian Navy with the support of the then West German "Marine Technik" planning company. On October 1, 1981, the contract to build the ship type was signed. The first pair was ordered on February 15, 1982 and the second pair on January 9, 1986. In mid-1986 the government confirmed that it wanted to build up to 16 ships of this type. However, this decision was later reduced to four units. The home base is the 1st frigate squadron in Niterói , Rio de Janeiro .
A multi-year modernization of the class began with the relocation of the Júlio de Noronha to the shipyard in 2008 and continued with the Inhaúma and the Jaceguai , respectively in 2009 and 2011. Due to problems during these measures, which resulted in the Júlio de Noronha not being able to return to operational service by mid-2015, and financial austerity measures, the Brazilian Navy decided the youngest ship in the class, the Frontin , from active service in 2014 and formally decommission it in September 2015.
It is planned to replace the ships with units from Project CV03 , a modified Barroso class to be built at the Naval Arsenal (Arsenal de Marinha) in Rio de Janeiro . A type ship is to be put into service in 2020, and (at least) three more ships will follow, each four years apart.
