The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries ( Korean : 해양 수산부 , transliteration : Haeyang-susan-bu, English : Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries , MOF for short) is a ministry of the government of South Korea . It bears responsibility in the areas of shipping and fishing . From 1996 to 2008 it was called the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries ( English : Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries , shortly MOMAF).

history

In July 1948 the Bureau of Maritime Transport was established under the Ministry of Transport and the Bureau of Fisheries under the Ministry of Trade and Industry. In 1955 the marine affairs agency was established, but it was split up again in 1961 under the Park Chung-hee military government : the shipping resort went to the Ministry of Transport and the fishery resort to the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry.

The Department of Oceans and Fisheries was established as the Department of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries in 1996 during a cabinet reform under President Kim Young-sam .

In 2008, under President Lee Myung-bak, the ministry was dissolved again. The resort for maritime affairs went to the Ministry of Construction and Transport, which then changed its name to Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs ( Korean : 국토 해양부 ; English : Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs , short: MLTM), and the resort fishery to the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, which was renamed the Ministry of Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries ( Korean : 농림 수산 식품부 ; English : Ministry for Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries , MIFAFF for short).

Under President Park Geun-hye , the ministry was re-established in 2013 as the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries.
