The Villa Girbardt was an upper-class villa in Leipzig and part of the villa ring along Karl-Tauchnitz-Straße in the music district . The house was destroyed in the air raids on Leipzig in World War II.

History and description

The villa was built in 1888 by Max Pommer (1847–1915) for the merchant Hilmar Girbardt in neo -renaissance style and was located at Karl-Tauchnitz-Straße 17. According to the old census, the villa had the address Carl-Tauchnitz-Straße 33 , according to the new one Counting Karl-Tauchnitz-Straße 17 . Shortly before the end of the war, the NSDAP politician and Lord Mayor of Leipzig Alfred Freyberg (1893–1945) lived here .

After the seizure of power by the National Socialists was Sparkasse Leipzig owner of the house. This and the later resident Alfred Freyberg are an indication that Girbardt had to leave the country as a persecuted by the Nazi regime .

The villa had a large garden that extended to Wächterstrasse. There was also a stable building ( Remise ) on the property .

The area of ​​the former villa and its garden were combined with neighboring plots of five war-torn villas ( Villa Gruner , Villa Oelßner , Villa Wölker , Villa Hermann Beckmann and Villa Carl Beckmann ) between Ferdinand-Rhode-Straße and Beethovenstraße to form one property and in 1970 with three 16-storey high-rise buildings (type PH 16 ) built by Walter Havliczek. They are popularly called "the three equals".
