History and description

Ground plan and garden plan of Villa Gruner (before 1893)

The villa was built from 1886 to 1887 by Arwed Roßbach (1844–1902) for the city councilor Carl Robert Gruner (1834–1901) in the neo-renaissance style and stood at 19 Karl-Tauchnitz-Strasse at the corner of Beethovenstrasse. According to the old census, the villa, which according to the new census was called Karl-Tauchnitz-Straße 19 , had the address Carl-Tauchnitz-Straße 35 . Around 1913 the secret councilor , Thekla Gruner-Demiani, owned the house.

The garden plan shows rear terraces , outside stairs to the garden, side lanes for vehicles, horses and staff - so-called Remisen . The villa with its elongated private park formed the end of a whole representative quarter starting in Ferdinand-Rhode-Strasse up to the confluence with Beethovenstrasse.

Today the area of the former villa and its garden are partially taken up by the high-rise building at Karl-Tauchnitz-Straße 17. The property of Villa Gruner was merged with neighboring properties of five war-damaged villas ( Villa Oelßner , Villa Wölker , Villa Girbardt , Villa Hermann Beckmann and Villa Carl Beckmann ) between Ferdinand-Rhode-Straße and Beethovenstraße, whereupon in 1970 the three 16-storey high-rise buildings ( Type PH 16 ) were built by Walter Havliczek. Popularly known as "the three equals".
