history

1986 to 2001

The FUTURA project was founded in 1986 during a political upheaval as an experimental location for social counter-drafts. Uta Koch-Götze is one of the founders of the project and was artistic director from 1986 to the end of 2011. The founders were predominantly of the 68 generation. They were representatives of the second women's movement and the international women's peace movement. The dragon Futura was chosen to name the project and the gallery. As a symbol for the resistance of the women of Berlin after the events in Chernobyl , it had been presented as an art object in many demonstrations. As part of the FUTURA project, the futura gallery was an art space designed by women for women. It offered space to deal with the prevailing mechanisms of the art world and developed structures and presentation options especially for women artists. Cooperations were established with the Haus am Waldsee and the Women's Museum (Bonn) . The project rooms were located in Zehlendorf from 1986 to 2001 .

2002 to 2011

From 2001 to the end of 2011 the gallery rooms were located in an Art Nouveau building in Friedenau . The house offered good conditions for representative exhibitions, but also for supporting programs with high public appeal such as readings, book and concert premieres, round table discussions, the German-Jewish dialogue or the long-standing working group of women from different cultural contexts, from which two publications were published by Geest-Verlag published. All offers had a workshop character and were grouped under the name alpha nova-kulturwerkstatt . This included the werkstattTHEATER alpha nova , which has since become independent, and the collaboration with Aviva Verlag , Edition Ebersbach and Aphaia Verlag. The gallery and cultural workshop are part of the Südwestpassage Kultur network in Friedenau.

Since 2012

The cultural and gender scientist and curator Katharina Koch and the music and gender scientist Marie-Anne Kohl took over the artistic management of the exhibition and event location at the beginning of 2012. The move not only went hand in hand with the move of the project to the art factory at Flutgraben in Alt-Treptow on the grounds of the Arena Berlin , but also with a realignment of the concept. As a place from artists for artists, the spectrum expanded to include cultural workers with queer-feminist approaches. With a feminist and anti-racist approach, the alpha nova & galerie futura project aims to create publics for gender and identity issues as well as post-colonial perspectives and to create a context in which discursive formats are intertwined with artistic and activist ones. In addition to exhibitions, this includes above all performative, collaborative, process and conversation-based offers as well as round table discussions and workshops for the professional exchange of cultural producers, advice and support for women in artistic fields. In October 2015 the artist Dorothea Nold took over the artistic direction together with Katharina Koch.

Barbara Straka was the patron of the exhibition . The exhibition and the extensive supporting program were funded by the Berlin Senate Administration / Equal Opportunities Office , the Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg Cultural Office and the Gerda-Weiler Foundation. Press

“The fact that Futura still exists is also due to its unusual founding history and the idea that emerged from it: to offer women from art and culture a place where they can come together to network and to discuss their positions - regardless whether they are already established or still unknown - to present. Futura is a field of experimentation and a place to exchange experiences for artists of different generations. Back then, in the mid-1980s, it was a novelty, it is still something special today. "
